Five days ago, my cat, Homey, went missing. Rescued from a Cholon (District 5, HCM City) pet-food market as a kitten (and that means pets-as-food), Homey jumped off a sixth-floor balcony and survived — twice — when strangers came into our apartment. Having been mistreated as a kitten, he never let anyone but me and my husband near him.
For 10 years, Homey negotiated the mean streets of Saigon, avoiding trouble by keeping his distance from people. When he failed to come home last week, I did all the things you’d do when a pet goes missing anywhere: told the neighbours, roamed nearby streets calling for him, stuck up REWARD posters.
Last night, the cops arrested two guys in neighbouring District 9 for hunting dogs and cats with a Taser. Some Tasers can shoot up to 35 feet (10.6 metres). Over the past six months, these guys reportedly caught and killed 200 pets. It seems all too likely that Homey was one of their last victims.
